SOS WALK FOR CHILDREN

- July 6 – 13, 2013
- Camp Woods, Sylan Lake, Alberta
- Expected up to 10,000 participants, ranging from 10-15 different countries
- First Responders have been approved to participate as part of the emergency services medical sector, along with other scouting groups from Halifax, Toronto, and Edmonton.
- First Responders will be assisting the organization and planning for all areas of the event including Hospital, First Aid Posts, Logistics and Staffing. If you are interested, email Jeff at jwatts@shaw.ca to get on a committee now.
MISCELLANEOUS AND UNSCHEDULED EVENTS
EMR – Emergency Medical Responder Course – add-on to First Responder training with higher level skills. Canadian Red Cross certification now available for licensing with the EMA Licensing Board under the British Columbia Provincial Ministry of Health Services – licensed to practice paramedicine. This course may be offered more frequently as we update our lesson plans.
UBC EMAT – The University of British Columbia has started a “Emergency Medical Aid Team” (EMAT). If you wish to be a part of the team, please contact Albert Chiang (alb.chiang@gmail.com). Membership fees $10 for current UBC students, and $15 as an “associate member” (non-UBC student) for the club.
Duke of Edinburgh Awards Program – contact Jeff Watts
MedVents – The GVMAST First Responders program may re-start the “Medical Venturers” crew as a part of Scouts Canada. If you are currently a member of Scouts Canada, you may be eligible in joining the program under a service capacity where registration fees and other services may be wavered in return for your first aid services. You may also be entitled to scholarships available to the scouting community. We may send the MedVents crew to CJ’2013. More details to come.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships will be available to graduating First Responders for the 2011/2012 school year. Criteria will be based upon number of hours spent at community events. Selection committee is still being formed. You will have to apply for the scholarship. Application will have more details, and a list of past events and number of hours. Scholarships will be awarded at the end of the school year in June 2012 during the valedictory ceremonies.
